How did the Albany CWA 'Seaside Flats' begin?
In 1935 a branch of a new, pro-active women's organisation, the Countrywomen s Association (CWA), was formed in Albany. Their very first project was raising the funds to establish and maintain affordable holiday units for regional and remote families at beautiful Middleton Beach, on a block transferred to them by neighbouring Katanning.
These 'Seaside Flats' were built with funds and labour provided by CWA Branches and local businesses right across the Great Southern, eventually being adopted as a CWA 'State Project'. The Albany Seaside Flats were much appreciated by desperate farming and urban families in the inter-war years following the Great Depression. CWA also sponsored visiting groups of needy country children, enabling their first, unforgettable experience of the sea.
The Albany Seaside Flats were opened in September 1938, with a third unit added in 1947.
*** These original units are currently closed, awaiting renovation. ***
The facility had proved so popular that a further 5 units were built on the adjoining block in 1968, including Reception and caretakers unit, and these are the 5 units currently available for hire.
